Kelcy Warren Named to Hart Energy Hall of Fame

Kelcy Warren’s decades of work building Energy Transfer earned him a spot in Hart Energy’s 50th anniversary Hall of Fame series, which honors industry pioneers who shaped the energy sector over the past half century. The recognition caps a career that began with a single job offer out of college and grew into one of the largest pipeline networks in North America.

A Career Built on Deals

Warren graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington and took a position with Lone Star Gas Co. before moving to the pipeline and refining company Endevco. When Endevco ran into financial trouble, Warren helped arrange its sale to himself and two investors, Ray C. Davis and Ben Cook, a transaction that funded the founding of Energy Transfer in 1996.

That company started small, with about 200 miles of East Texas natural gas pipelines. Under Kelcy Warren’s leadership, it grew through a mix of organic projects, including the Dakota Access Pipeline, and a long list of acquisitions that accelerated after the Enron collapse and again during the recent midstream consolidation wave.

Recognition Rooted in Results

Among the deals Kelcy Warren points to most is the 2012 purchase of Sunoco, the company where his late father worked for his entire career as a pipeline field hand. “It was just unbelievably rewarding,” Warren said of the acquisition, adding that it also made sound business sense for the company’s unitholders.

More recently, Energy Transfer has added Enable Midstream, Lotus Midstream and Crestwood Equity Partners to its portfolio, moves that extended its reach into the Permian Basin, Bakken Shale and Powder River Basin. Warren has said he still sees more acquisition targets worth pursuing, along with opportunities to expand into LNG, petrochemicals and international markets, a sign that the Hall of Fame honor is unlikely to mark the end of his ambitions.
