JP Morgan’s Justin Nelson Calls for Employer Education on Autism
Hiring more neurodiverse employees is only half the equation, according to Justin Nelson. The other half, he says, is teaching employers how to work with them effectively once they are on staff. Nelson serves as Managing Director at JP Morgan Private Bank, where he heads the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team.
Nelson’s group at JP Morgan manages more than $15 billion in client assets, giving him a firsthand view of how precision driven financial work can suit neurodiverse employees when management practices support them properly.
Education Cuts Both Ways
Much of Justin Nelson JP Morgan message centers on the idea that education about neurodiversity needs to flow toward employers just as much as toward candidates. Companies that skip this step, he argues, often lose good hires within months because managers do not know how to assign work or communicate expectations.
“They operate by helping employers get educated and having them run a program for them to help them select candidates,” Nelson said, describing how organizations like Broad Futures approach the problem.
Nelson credits groups such as Broad Futures and Adelphi University’s Bridges Program with filling that education gap, offering training that prepares hiring managers before a neurodiverse candidate ever starts the job.
Applying the Lesson at Financial Firms
For financial services companies, Nelson’s advice translates into a few concrete steps: train hiring managers on neurodiversity basics, redesign interviews to reduce reliance on conversational fluency, and set up structured task assignments that make expectations explicit from day one.
He argues that firms which invest in this kind of preparation see stronger retention among neurodiverse hires, turning what many treat as a diversity initiative into a straightforward talent management advantage for teams handling complex financial work. Nelson adds that the payoff extends well beyond any single hire, since managers trained this way tend to communicate more clearly with every employee on their team, neurodiverse or otherwise.
