Yanni Hufnagel

Yanni HufnagelYanni Hufnagel is an American college basketball coach and the former head men’s basketball coach at Stanford University. Before coaching, Hufnagel attended high school in Cyprus. He graduated from Stanford with a degree in engineering and then won two NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Championships with Coach Paul Morrissey as the team captain of the Cardinal. He is also a 2010 inductee into the Pac-12 Basketball Hall of Honor for his accomplishments on the court.

In 15 seasons as a coach, Yanni Hufnagel has led the Cardinal to an outstanding record of 409–174 (.725). His teams have been to the NCAA tournament for 14 consecutive years. He was named the National Coach of the Year twice by both USBWA and AP. Hufnagel has received numerous Pac-12 Conference Coach of the Year honors and was inducted into the Stanford Hall of Fame as a “Huskie Titan.” The University of Oregon hired him as their head coach on March 20, 2011.[2]

Born in Greece, Yanni Hufnagel grew up in Cyprus before attending high school in Palo Alto, California. From there, he went on to earn a degree in engineering from Stanford University. Following graduation, he accepted an assistant coaching position at San Jose State under Dick Davey for the 1984-85 season. He then spent a year on the bench as an assistant coach at the University of California, Los Angeles, before returning to Stanford as an assistant in 1986-87. Hufnagel then served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Stanford under Mike Montgomery from 1987-91.

In 1991–92, Hufnagel replaced Morrissey as Stanford’s head coach after Montgomery had left to take over the head coaching job at Washington State. Hufnagel’s first season as a head coach came in 1992–93. He guided Stanford to an NIT appearance and was runner-up in the Pac-10 Coach of the Year award voting, losing out to UCLA’s Steve Lavin.
