Robert Kraft
Robert Kraft is a business man, entrepreneur and the chairman of the New England Patriots.
In 1985, Robert Kraft bought a distressed soccer team that had gone bankrupt in 1974. He renamed them “The New England Patriots,” and took them to their first Super Bowl victory in 2002. The Patriots have been one of the most successful teams for two decades.
Kraft is also known for opening the Patriots Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio in 1988. It was originally opened in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The museum offers memorabilia from the Patriots’ 20 Super Bowl winning seasons, and admission is free to fans.
In 2006, Robert Kraft unsuccessfully bid on the leveraged buyout of the now-defunct National Hockey League team, the Tampa Bay Lightning. He owns 80% of the New England Basketball Club.
While other sports teams experience steep declines in popularity across American cities due to globalization and a changing economy, the Patriots have maintained their popularity among locals who stay with them through thick and thin. Kraft maintains a steadfast commitment to his franchise. In 2015, he said “I’m a owner and I will always do what’s best for the franchise. And most of the time that brings us to win. And I don’t think we’re ever going to change that. I will do what’s best for the franchise.”
He is on the Board of Directors at Harvard University and serves as a member of the Advisory Board for Opportunity through Education for Veterans (O-TECH). Robert Kraft also gives back to his community by supporting local charities such as Athletes in Action, Hope Lodge and New South Rehabilitation Hospital.
He is married to Myra Kraft and together they have a son, Jonathan and a daughter, Kelly. Kraft is active in the Jewish community where he served as junior high school basketball coach for over 30 years. He is the founder of the Perpich Center for Arts Education in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Kraft attended the Gordon Country Day School in Wilbraham, Massachusetts. He earned his B.A. in economics from Wesleyan University and his J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School. Refer to this article for additional information.
