Mike Feinberg Reinvents Trade Education with Support-First Model

When Mike Feinberg co-founded WorkTexas in 2020, he brought a fresh perspective to workforce development: success in trade careers requires more than just technical training. His innovative program combines intensive skills development with comprehensive support services, creating a new model for sustainable career preparation.

The program’s foundation reflects Feinberg’s practical approach to education. “We are employer-focused,” he explains, describing his mission “to help people get jobs, keep jobs, advance careers.” This philosophy shapes the program’s intensive 11-week curriculum, which provides 170 hours of targeted training at locations including Gallery Furniture and the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department’s Opportunity Center.

But Feinberg’s most significant innovation comes from his understanding of real-world challenges. “A lot of people we train are one flat tire away from disaster,” he notes. “We can help everyone get a job based on their training; but you’re not going to do well in your job if you’re homeless or hungry, or your car stops working.” This insight has led to crucial support services, including childcare solutions for more than 60 children.

Through what Feinberg calls a “sandbox” approach to community collaboration, the program creates networks of support that enhance career success. “The people who are working on food, housing and physical health realize their work can only truly make a huge impact if people wind up having a sustainable career,” he explains. This comprehensive approach demonstrates how workforce development can create lasting impact when practical training meets real-world support.
