 Glenn Lurie Recap

Glenn Lurie is a famous American businessman who has been CEO of Sony Mobile USA, AT&T Mobility, and General Motors. His story began when he was born in the Bronx and raised in Yonkers. Glenn Lurie attended Columbia University, where he studied mathematics. After graduating with his degree, he became a mathematician at Lehman Brothers before it went bankrupt in 2008.

Lurie then became an executive at Sony Mobile, where he helped turn the company’s prospects around. His next job was as CEO of AT&T Mobility. He tried to stop their subscriber losses from year to year by managing acquisitions and partnerships that would diversify its customer base for the future, such as with Apple for their iPhone Data plans. Lurie’s next job was as CEO of General Motors, where he had to focus on the company’s long-term value instead of short-term profits. His focus was on the scale; he used partnerships with Lyft and Apple to introduce a fleet of self-driving cars.

Lurie was recently asked to be the CEO of Sony Mobile, but he turned them down because he had to focus on his children’s education and health. At the time, Sony had a fragile product line-up and underperforming phone models, but Lurie believed they did not focus enough on the future. The smartphones had lagged behind other features, so his plan called for mobile carriers to partner with Sony Mobile and focus on new technology instead of just selling phones. He would grow the company and make them more successful over the next 20 years.

Lurie is a successful businessman who helped turn around three companies but is also very family oriented. He had to choose between his family and Sony Mobile, but he chose family because they were more critical. He realized how important it was to him when his son had a mental health crisis, and he wanted to stay home and be there for him when he needed him the most. Sony Mobile later hired Kazuo Hirai as CEO instead of Lurie, who stayed in New York with his family. Source: https://glennlurie.me/
