Mr. Lindsay just returned from his second trip to China and discussed his experiences with Mining World News (MWN). What did he learn? “I worked very hard after retirement,” said Don Lindsay, “to remain a valued member of the company I once led, and my professional development continues.” Even after retirement, Mr. Lindsay continues to lead Teck.
Don Lindsay is a known leader and innovator in the Canadian mining industry. Under his leadership, Teck has been recognized as one of Canada’s Best 100 Employers for several years.

Mr. Lindsay’s reputation for speaking his mind on controversial issues has made him respected and feared by others in the industry. He is a man who exudes confidence but will also candidly admit that he respects those who stand up for their beliefs and actions, even when they disagree with them or fail because of them. “We trust each other,” said Mr. Lindsay, “when we disagree about something, we are honor-bound to try and solve it. If one person solves the problem, great; if the effort fails, then the reason for it is identified, and solutions adopted that will not fail again.”
Mr. Lindsay has been a strong advocate for knowledge-sharing and international development. As part of his contributions to Teck, he recruited investment from China’s premier state-owned mining company. During a previous visit to China with Teck, Mr. Lindsay learned that Canada could not afford to be left behind in this large market in the future: “Our competitors, like China, have already taken into account our significant natural resources wealth and they quietly began to invest their capital into those resources.”
